It ends in tears for man who murdered final year engineering student after meeting on Facebook
A man who murdered a final year engineering student is set to languish in prison after receiving a hefty jail term.
The two met on Facebook and their relationship blossomed to an extent that they decided to meet.
He was found guilty of the murder of Xolile Mbatha after he stabbed her until she lost consciousness.
Judge Charmaine Bolton sentenced Bongani Mlambo, 28, to 22 years in prison for killing Mbatha, 23 at her Ark Royal residence in South Beach on July 31 2022. Mbatha, who came from rural Msinga, was a final year electrical engineering student.
According to the state prosecutor, theor relationship kicked off on Facebook in 2018.
They eventually decided to meet in person in 2019 and everything seemed well until Mbatha started exchanging WhatsApp messages with a male colleague.
This did not sit down well with Mlambo who showed his possessive side. He went to her residence unannounced and stabbed her to death.
It is alleged that one time Mbatha fell pregnant and she suffered an unfortunate miscarriage.
The void left by Mbatha’s death was also devastating for her four-year-old daughter who often asked family members to fetch her mum from Durban.
Mlambo was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder.
