FG Declares Three Days For Holidays

The Nigerian government on Friday declared December 26 and 27, 2022 and January 2, 2023, as public holidays for the celebration of Christmas and New Year.
The public holidays according to a statement by the permanent secretary of the ministry of interior, Belgore Shuaib, are to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day celebrations respectively.
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, in the statement charged Christians to emulate the doctrines of Jesus Christ during the celebration, as “We must imbibe the life of Jesus Christ in His practice and teachings on humility, service, compassion, patience, peace and righteousness.”
He further called on Christians to use the festive period to pray for the total eradication of the insecurity ravaging Nigeria, pointing out that peace and security are two critical conditions for economic development and prosperity.

Students, Youths Protest Police Harassment

One person was on Thursday shot dead as students of the newly opened Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental sciences, Umuagwo, and youths residents in the area protested alleged police brutality.
The protesting youths who blocked the ever-busy Owerri- Port Harcourt expressway, demanded an end to police harassment and brutality in the area.
Not long after the protest commenced, policemen allegedly mobilized to the scene and started shooting indiscriminately.
While the protesters scampered for safety, 26-year-old Izuchukwu Okorie, who was not part of the protest, was hit by a stray bullet.
INEC Restores Facilities Hoodlums Destroyed In Enugu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it has restored the facilities destroyed by gunmen in various local government areas in Enugu State in readiness for the 2023 general elections.
In the last one year, INEC offices in seven local government areas were razed by gunmen, frustrating pre-election activities in the areas.
But speaking with The Nation in his office in Enugu, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Chukwuemeka Joseph Chukwu, said the commission had since renovated the buildings and provided all the equipment necessary for the success of the 2023 elections in the affected areas.
